Kayaking on Sardinia – according to the roaming Norwegian
My first kayak trip on this emerald coloured sea was back in April 2017 and since then I’ve had a chance to kayak at a few different places along this gorgeous coast line. In every place there’s something to see, something different. What stands out the most is maybe the sea itself, or more precisely, the clear water. The sun reflecting through the water gives the sea such an clear, inviting look. It’s also fascinating to be able to see deep down under your kayak when you paddle. Fish, starfish and sometimes sea urchins. The sea urchins here have long, black spines and against the whiter rocks they look like black dots. This clear water also enhance the colours of the stones and rocks along the coastline and as you paddle along the coast the scenery under your kayak also changes. Many places are rich in nooks and crannies, crevices and little caves in the coast line rock so there’s much to explore and many places to squeeze the kayak through. And also tiny little beaches, only reachable via the sea, hidden under steep cliffs towering above, some have beautiful white sand, some tiny little colourful pebbles that rolls with the waves and others with bigger stones making it almost impossible to get ashore. Even so, it’s perfect for finding a private beach to have your lunch. I could go on and on about the beauty of kayaking along this coast and the wonders of being at sea here, but this time I will make it short and sweet and practical and put my favourites in a list. La mia prima esperienza in questo mare color smeraldo è datata ormai aprile 2017, un anno fa. E da allora ho avuto diverse occasioni di ammirare diversi luoghi della bellissime coste dell’isola. Ognuno di questi è diverso e con tantissime cose da vedere. Ma ciò che impressiona davvero è il colore di un’acqua sempre costantemente limpida e, soprattutto dove il fondale è sabbioso, il sole conferisce al mare una tonalità di freschi colori. Mentre si pagaia puoi riconoscere a metri in profondità pesci, stelle marine e i ricci di mare, piccoli puntini scuri che ammantano le pareti sommerse di rocce chiarissime. La possibilità di esplorare luoghi inaccessibili vi farà scoprire piccole insenature, grotte e fessure nelle falesie e incantevoli spiaggette con accesso quasi esclusivo dal mare. Battigie ciottolate e piccoli approdi inaccessibili sotto ripide scogliere che si avvicendano con arenili di sabbia chiarissima. È perfetto trovare qui un luogo isolato per poter consumare un frugale pranzo. Potrei andare avanti all’infinito descrivendovi la bellezza di fare kayak lungo le coste sarde ma stavolta voglio farla breve creando invece una lista pratica di cose e consigli per i kayaker.
- The colour of the sea, the transparent, crystal clear water and lack of underwater growth allows you to see far below you, the scenery beneath the kayak is almost as fascinating as the scenery on the coastline you kayak along. (Soffermatevi a osservare senza fretta. Noterete ciò che è la caratteristica principale del mare Mediterraneo in quest’area. Il colore, la trasparenza.)
- You don’t need tons of clothes on, no dry suit or sweaty neoprene. You can actually move your arms easily and wriggle your toes in the cockpit. (Non portatevi tonnellate di abbigliamento. Ad eccezione delle giornate più fredde dei cortissimi inverni sardi qui non avrete bisogno di tute stagne o neoprene.)
- Along this coastline there are tiny, gorgeous little beaches you can only reach by sea, and the size and nimbleness of a kayak makes it possible to explore these little gems up close. (Atterrate sugli arenili e godeteveli fino in fondo. Le dimensioni ridotte dei kayak permettono di scendere su qualunque punto della costa che abbia un accenno di spiaggia o approdo.)
- There are amazing caves here that’s only accessible by sea, small caves and big caves. Some has an opening or two at the other end so you can go in and out and through to your hearts content, others are smaller and can just fit your kayak and you need to watch your head (and paddle). (Andate alla ricerca di piccole o grandi cavità che il mare e gli agenti atmosferici hanno modellato permettendo a piccole imbarcazioni di percorrerle in profondità o attraversarle come veri e propri tunnel.)
- Close up view of the sea stacks, these magnificent big rocks are very fascinating up close. You can notice how much the sea has been ‘eating’ into the rock and made a groove at the sea surface. Another million years and the sea stack will topple over, but not in my life time I think. (Visitate quei magnifici faraglioni di roccia che il mare sta modellando da milioni di anni. Noterete il lavoro continuo dell’acqua che crea un solco sempre più profondo sotto la parte emersa delle rocce.)
- Stopping for lunch at a private little beach. (Fermatevi per pranzare nella vostra spiaggetta privata.)
- If you’re lucky you’ll see amazing wildlife, sometimes dolphins puffing loudly, buzzards and other birds, fish underneath you, a wild boar taking a stroll on a beach. (Se siete fortunati sarete i protagonisti di incontri incredibili con piccoli branchi di delfini che sbuffano rumorosamente. Osserverete rapaci che cacciano le loro prede sulle falesie arroventate dal sole mentre nugoli di pesci faranno capolino sotto di voi. E magari non crederete ai vostri occhi scorgendo in lontananza un cinghiale che passeggia tranquillo su una spiaggia.)
- Many easy launch spots – with all the small beaches along this coast there are always somewhere to launch a kayak from as long as there’s a road close by to get your car there you’re all set. Or in the absence of a beach a little village harbour will do. (Non preoccupatevi dei punti da cui lanciare il vostro kayak. Se non vi accontentate delle tante piccole spiagge ci saranno per voi i porticcioli dei tanti paesi affacciati sul mare a darvi la possibilità di iniziare la vostra nuova avventura.)
- Peace and quiet at sea, if one avoid the busy areas you can paddle all day and not see any boats or other traffic or indeed people. (Non sorprendetevi della pace e tranquillità che troverete una volta lasciata la terra. Pagaierete per ore senza incontrare nessuno soprattutto nei mesi invernali mentre in estate, ad eccezione dei luoghi più frequentati, troverete comunque luoghi tranquilli e privi di traffico da diporto.)
- The weather is always good (in the warmer months that is) – the sun always shines it seems . But the wind can be a bit of an issue, be aware of the sea breeze blowing up during your trip. On the way back to the launch point you can be unlucky and experience it in an unfavourable direction. (Che dire del tempo in Sardegna. Sempre bello nei mesi più caldi con un sole che illumina e riscalda quest’isola fantastica. Solo il vento può essere un problema. Siate consapevoli del fatto che i venti a regime di brezza esplodono anche con una certa forza in determinate condizioni ed in certi luoghi.)
I would recommend kayaking with somebody local if possible. Many of the really cool places are not marked on a map, but only known by people who know and kayak this particular stretch of coast. Get advice on where to go to make sure you find the hidden gems. Fatevi guidare da persone esperte del luogo, è questo il mio consiglio migliore. Vi daranno buone dritte sulla sicurezza, sul tempo, ma soprattutto sapranno indicarvi i luoghi più belli e conosciuti solo dai locali.
As we’re on the roll of making lists, here’s a list of what I would say is the: Top 10 things I would bring on a kayaking trip on Sardinia Le 10 cose da portare con voi in kayak in Sardegna
- Water! Without a doubt, it can get very hot even out at sea. (Acqua senza dubbio. Soprattutto nei mesi estivi ci può essere molto caldo anche in mare.)
- Food! it’s so easy to kayak ‘just a little further’ and ‘just a little further’ and then all of a sudden realise there’s a two hour kayak trip to go back to your launch point! Bring a packed lunch and stop at a private little beach for an energy re-fill, or at least have some snacks stored within reach from the cockpit. (È sempre così in kayak, “dai andiamo un po’oltre”, “dai solo un poco” e poi ti rendi conto che per tornare al tuo punto di lancio ci vogliono più di due ore. Portatevi un pranzo al sacco, barrette energetiche, roba leggera da consumare a terra nei tanti luoghi d’atterraggio che si trovano sulla nostra rotta o da conservare nei day hatch e utilizzare mentre si pagaia.)
- Camera(s) – there are always little gems hiding along this coastline, a camera to capture some of them is a must. (Fotocamera. Con tutto ciò che c’è da vedere diventa un must da non dimenticare.)
- Suncream & lip balm – definitely needed, the sun and the reflection from the water makes it really necessary, also in the cooler months. And if you splash a bit like I do or indeed eat apples soaked in salt water (as it gets wet when you put in on your spray skirt…) plus wind and sun your lips dry out fast. Very uncomfortable over longer trips. (Creme solari e protettivi per la pelle e le labbra. Necessari anche nei mesi più freddi.)
- A hat – cover your head and face from the baking sun, particularly if you’re from the North like me, something to keep your head and face in the shadow is a must. (Un copricapo. Anche questo non deve mancare soprattutto se venite da paesi del nord e non siete abituati a quanto sia forte il sole sardo.)
- Kayak shoes, neoprene socks or other thick sock or suitable shoes for landing – beach stones can be VERY hot in the summer and burn your feet! Or indeed very sharp. (Scarpe da kayak in neoprene. Servono per stare più comodi quando atterrate. Le rocce o gli arenili possono essere roventi nelle giornate più calde. Eviterete anche di ferirvi colpendo pietre affilate o ricci di mare.)
- Change of clothes for after, even on warm summer days, if you leave the kayak at one point during your trip you’re bound to be a bit damp or if like me; wet. Water always seems to come in somehow. It’s not much fun sitting in the car after with a wet bum or wet top. (Cambio di vestiti)
- A towel; for drying feet and hands and changing under after, I even bring one in the kayak cockpit for drying my hands if I need to do something on my phone or camera during the trip. (telo da mare.)
- Dry bags for the stuff you really want dry. In my ignorance I thought kayaking down here in the warm and sunny paradise meant that you never really got too wet inside the kayak, but yes you do. (Borse stagne di piccole e media grandezza. Per tenere all’asciutto documenti e altro materiale da proteggere dalla salsedine e dall’acqua.)
- Wear the SPF shirts/tops surfers use. For me coming from the North I had not even heard about SPF clothes, but these are great. They keep you protected from the sun, but they don’t make you hot or sticky and they never really get wet either. There’s even a ‘winter version’ for the cooler months. (Utilizzare maglie in lycra per proteggersi dal sole. Sono adatte al clima sardo e una volta bagnate si asciugano in fretta. Ne esiste una versione anche invernale.)
The above is mostly for kayaking in the warmer months, winter kayaking will be quite similar though, just more layers of clothes. And please be aware – do not have the same ignorance as I did. Coming from the rough North Sea thinking that the Mediterranean did not really have ‘bad’ weather or rough seas – BUT YES IT DOES – and the sea can blow up REALLY fast too. If anyone has any other favourites about kayaking on Sardinia than the ones I have listed above I’d love to hear about it, either in a comment or in a message. Same also for things to bring on kayaking trips when kayaking in warmer climates. Quanto sopra, relativamente all’abbigliamento, è consigliato per i mesi che vanno da aprile a ottobre. Per il periodo invernale basterà dotarsi di giacca d’acqua e proteggersi un po’ di più con abbigliamento adeguato ma senza mai eccedere. E per favore, non fate il mio stesso errore. Venendo dal Mare del Nord pensavo che il Mediterraneo fosse sempre placido e calmo. E non è proprio così in quanto mi sono dovuta ricredere perché qui il mare può veramente diventare mosso e anche in fretta. NOTE: I have not mentioned any safety equipment in my list as I take it for granted that this is included on ANY adventure in a kayak. No matter how nice the weather is or if the sea is warm and you only paddle in knee-deep water. ALWAYS follow commonly accepted guidelines for safety at sea – stay safe people!! Nota bene, non ho fatto menzione alcuna di equipaggiamento per la sicurezza in quanto è sottinteso che questo dovrebbe essere portato sempre con sé in qualsiasi avventura in kayak e non importa se il tempo sia bello o meno. Seguite sempre le linee guida per la sicurezza andando per mare.
