How many times have you wondered what kind of paddle is best for you. I began asking myself this question from the start, while for some of my kayaking friends this never seemed to be an issue. But how do we choose a good paddle that satisfies us totally? There are many parameters to consider and to choose from and once you’ve started to evaluate all those you’re hardly in the mood to buy a new paddle and stick with your old one. You could say, better the old paddle you know and is comfortable with than go down a new path with a new paddle. But let’s put our thoughts in order and make a list of what drives us to buy one over the other or to stay faithful to the old one. Undoubtedly one of the first thoughts is with regards to budget, If the funds are very limited even before thinking about buying a new paddle, which could possibly cost hundreds of euros, I would likely desist buying. Quante volte vi sarete chiesti che tipo di pagaia è più adatta a voi. Io ho iniziato a mettermi qualche dubbio da subito mentre per qualche mio amico kayaker il problema nemmeno se lo ha mai posto.
Ma come arriviamo a scegliere un buon equipaggiamento che ci soddisfi pienamente? Troppi i parametri di scelta che dovremmo mettere in campo e, una volta iniziata la cernita delle diverse offerte ci è già passata la voglia di comprare un’altra pagaia rimanendo anni con la nostra vecchia. Come dire, meglio il vecchio sentiero sicuro che una strada nuova piena di dubbi e incognite. Ma andiamo a mettere ordine ai nostri pensieri facendo quindi una lista di ciò che ci spinge a comprare uno o l’altro prodotto o a starcene a casa con la vecchia in mano. Indubbiamente il primo pensiero corre al nostro portafoglio. Se il mio budget è ridotto all’osso prima di pensare alla pagaia, che potrebbe costare perfino centinaia di euro, rinuncerò sicuramente all’acquisto.
But my birthday and Christmas are close so I start thinking about it. My lifelong friend and adventure companion and I have always argued on what paddle is most powerful, responsive and what model makes you less tired. We never come to a conclusion. He prefers the Euro blade with adjustable blade angles. I have used Greenland paddles for years and now I have two Gearlab carbon models. I think he likes the way that his kayak responds with a large blade while I’m fine in the longer distances and I do not tire easily. But never really knowing who is right, we rely on what we feel and each one of us holds on to our beliefs. It is not wrong to say that there are two different ways to paddle and that, I agree with him, when sea conditions get worse, I find my Greenland paddle, the AKIAK model, less reactive than the Euro blade. But that’s what Gearlab thought of when offering a surf paddle, the KAYAKID, which has a shorter length and a wider blade, details that make it suitable for rougher seas. Anyway, given my experience with Greenland paddles, I would not go back today. The Greenland paddle is the one I stick to for many reasons. A paddle like this offers little resistance to wind and less wrist movement, so since I started using the Greenland paddle my days at sea have become more and more enjoyable and with fewer ailments. Con il mio amico di una vita e compagno d’avventura discutiamo sempre animatamente su quale pala sia il modello più potente, reattivo o quello che ti faccia stancare meno. Non arriviamo mai a una conclusione. Lui preferisce quella europea con incidenza delle pale regolabile. Io da anni sono passato alla greenland ed utilizzo due modelli della Gearlab Paddles in carbonio. Credo che a lui piaccia il modo in cui il suo kayak reagisca meglio con una pala larga mentre le mie vanno bene nelle lunghe distanze e non mi fanno stancare assolutamente. Ma non sapendo mai chi ha ragione, ci affidiamo alle nostre sensazioni e ognuno di noi si tiene le sue convinzioni. Non è errato dire che sono due modi differenti di pagaiare e che, concordo con lui, quando le condizioni del mare peggiorano, trovo la mia greenland, il modello AKIAK, meno reattiva di quella europea. Ma a quello ci ha pensato Gearlab proponendo una surf paddle, la KAYAKID, che ha misure ridotte in lunghezza e una pala con larghezza superiore, dettagli che la rendono adatta a giornate con il mare formato. Ad ogni modo vista la mia esperienza con le pagaie greenland, oggi non tornerei indietro. Greenland per tutta la vita e i motivi principali sono molteplici. Una pala come questa offre scarsa resistenza al vento e, non essendo necessario il movimento del polso tipico nelle europee, le mie giornate in mare sono diventate sempre più piacevoli e con qualche acciacco in meno.

I modelli della Gearlab, come per esempio la mia AKIAK, sono superlative sulle lunghe distanze. Una giusta lunghezza, proporzionata con le mie misure antropometriche e quelle della sezione maestra del kayak, e il suo peso ridottissimo permettono di pagaiare per ore senza che la stanchezza si faccia sentire, soprattutto al trapezio e agli avambracci. Inoltre la possibilità offerta da una pagaia di utilizzarne tutta la sua lunghezza per le manovre in cui è necessario spostare le mani (ad esempio gli appoggi e l’eskimo) dà a questo tipo di equipaggiamento un altro punto a favore. Un punto, non a sfavore ma un dettaglio da considerare nella scelta d’acquisto, ma questo varrebbe anche per quelle di tipo europeo, è la vulnerabilità che hanno i materiali come il carbonio. Super leggero, rigidissimo ma incredibilmente delicato in caso di urto sulle rocce. Questo fatto mi mette sempre un po’in ansia quando passo su bassi fondali con equipaggiamenti come questi. Ed è per questo che Gearlab ha provveduto ad irrobustire soprattutto la parte terminale della pala con appositi tappi in materiale plastico che almeno evitano il peggio quando eventualmente si tocca con questa parte sul fondale o sulle rocce. Inoltre esistono gli stessi modelli, come AKIAK e NUKILIK nelle versioni in Kevlar che offrono maggiore resistenza in caso di urti. Ed è anche vero che il carbonio è un materiale inattaccabile dalla salsedine e dai raggi solari, fattore che garantisce lunga vita alla pagaia.
